About the band…

In the beginning there was a guy named Stony Browder Jr. He lived in the Bronx, NY. He lived and breathed music. And he had a vision: to create a band that would make super eclectic music for super eclectic people. Stony drafted his younger brother, Tommy (aka August Darnell) by maniacally belittling his job as an English teacher. "Join my band, brother, and forget all about grading papers until the break of dawn. Are you crazy?"

One eventful day in the Bronx, Dapper Stony met a beautiful young Doll named Cory Daye. Love was in the air. The pair became an item in 1970. As fate would have it, Cory was not only delicious, she was also an extraordinary singer. Thank the gods, because Stony needed a songstress to deliver his creations properly. He was not happy with the numerous singers he had already worked with. He needed a Billy Holiday. An Ella. A Doris Day. A Julie London. Stony now had the nucleus for his dream machine: He would create the music. Tommy would write the lyrics. Cory would sing the songs. Thus was born
Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band.

To make a long story short, out of respect to today’s TikTok generation:
Next came drummer Mickey Sevilla and percussionist SugarCoated Andy Hernandez (better known as Coati Mundi). Then came the RCA contract and the world was turned on to Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, a modern-day-bad-ass-swing-influenced group. Even though the band is best known for its number-one hit CHERCHEZ LA FEMME, let’s not forget some of their other gems: SUNSHOWER, HARD TIMES and I’LL PLAY THE FOOL. They released three albums between 1976 and 1979. First came the self-titled album, followed by ‘MEETS KING PƎNƎTT’, with the third album being ‘James Monroe H.S. presents Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band Goes to Washington’. They quickly became pioneers of a fusion genre that included a multi-cultural blend of rhythms and rhymes. We’re talking about big-band swing, calypso, rhumba, cha-cha-chá, mambo, country-western, pop, jazz, punk, funk and junk! Browder and Darnell wrote songs that celebrated the universal flaws and glories of the human condition. Cory Daye delivered the goods to the market place. Mickey and Mundi added extra spice to the mix, and made the magic even more palatable.

In the 19th Annual GRAMMY awards, the band was nominated for ’Best New Artist of the Year’. WATCH HERE
We predict that in 2023 the band will be nominated again. This time they will win!
